Shutter - 2004

Shutter aka The Original was directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom. In 2005, it was nominated in the best film category in the Golden Kinnaree Award. It won an Audience Award in 2006 though.

Photographer Tun (Ananda Everingham) along with his girlfriend Jane (Natthaweeranuch Thongmee) met with a car accident while returning from the party. Jane who was on the wheels hit a girl. Tun didn't allow her to help the accident victim and soon they fled the scene. Couple of days later, while developing his films, Tun noticed some ghostly marks and shadows on the pictures. After a little bit of research, Tun came to know that the girl who was killed in the accident was none other than his former girlfriend. On the other hand, Jane soon realized that her boyfriend has not told her everything. Slowly truth begins to unfold.

Though the storytelling factor in this movie is quite interesting, but somehow in between it looses the touch. It has some interesting cinematography and the director has done a pretty decent job too. Special effects are not really great but nonetheless they are admirable. Don't expect much from this flick. You will definitely get scared but there are plenty of other Asian horror movies available.

Lat De Ratte Komma In - 2008

Lat De Ratte Komma In aka Let The Right One In was directed by Tomas Alfredson. This movie is based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

The preteen kid Oskar (Kare Hedebrant) was bullied by his classmates and wanted to take revenge. He fell in love with Eli (Lina Leandersson), a strange girl of his age who could not bear the sunlight. Eli gave him all the strength required to fight back. As their love developed, Oskar realized that Eli was alive only by drinking other people's blood. But love overpowered everything.

Shot in the suburb of Stockholm, this movie was a perfect combination of romance and violence. The direction and the cinematography was of quite high standards. Even the actors did their job pretty well. After a long time, you got a drama based horror. A must watch for those who have liked The Others or The Tale of Two Sisters.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose - 2005

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was directed by Scott Derrickson and had bagged an award in both Golden Trailer Awards and MTV Movie Awards.

Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) conducted an exorcism of a young Catholic girl Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) who was suffering from Epilepsy but she died just couple of days after the incident. Though Emily's parents had given full consent to Father Moore for the exorcism, they blamed him for negligible homicide as he asked Emily to stop the medication for her epilepsy. To avoid the charges and scandal, an ambitious lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) was hired. The Court room was stormed by the battle between the religion and science.

Director Derrickson has done a really good job with the movie. The screenplay and cinematography are high class along with the direction. Acting was noteworthy especially in the role of the lawyer Erin Bruner. The movie contained good qualities of special effects, which in turn made the movie more enjoyable. The background score was added very efficiently and thus made the movie more interesting.

Cradle Of Fear - 2001

Cradle Of Fear was written and directed by Alex Chandon. This movie was made in UK but definitely lacked some British movie making class.

Detective Pete Nelson was in charge of the investigation of some bloody and gruesome series of murders, which were somehow connected to the serial killer Kemper. On the other hand, Melessa (Emily Booth) had sex with a sick man (Dani Filth) she met at the bar. The next morning she began to feel strange as is possessed by a devil. Soon she found out that she was pregnant with the sick man's offspring.

This movie is nothing more than strange mix of extreme violence and loud screams. A very amateurish camera work and direction can be easily noticed in the movie. Even the special effects and CGs are extremely bad. This flick is full of vampires, Goth cultures and gore, but sometimes these things only make the movie look funny. Nevertheless, a good attempt by the director considering the budget constraint.
